Observe a little closer.

The only warm light in the picture is the little clip lamp on the bow, and it lands on her page. The spirits were the hard part. They kept coming out too big, or as solid people instead of wisps, and the picture lost its quiet. Here they are small again, each one known by her hair: an afro, long braids, short locs.

Print artwork: a woman with her locs piled on her head, in a long cream nightgown, reads a green book in a small wooden rowboat resting on lilac clouds, with a clip lamp on the bow lighting her page in warm yellow and one oar dipped into the clouds. Above her, three pale wispy spirits in long white gowns float past through a teal sky full of gold stars, one with a round afro, one with long braids streaming and one with short locs.
