January Carnation Birth Flower Art Print

Not for sale yet. This design is a preview, so there's nothing to buy today.

A January birth flower art print: one red carnation and its bud, printed on the face of a cream seed packet from Bureau Seed Co., a seed house that never existed.

The carnation has fringed petals and a bud with a red tip, on a stem of narrow blue-grey leaves. CARNATION runs across a plum band at the top, a round 5¢ seal sits beside the flower, and JANUARY · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 01 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

Look at the edges of the red petals: each colour sits a little off its ink line, as if the packet went through the press in passes that didn't quite line up. The petals are fringed, and the bud shows a tip of red. We chose the carnation over the snowdrop because it reads better small, and a snowdrop is small and white, too close to December's paperwhite.

Print artwork: a cream paper seed packet at a slight tilt, with a thin plum border set with diamonds and dots, and BUREAU SEED CO. · No. 01 on its flap. CARNATION is printed in cream on a plum band at the top, beside a round plum seal reading 5¢. On the packet: one red carnation with fringed, ruffled petals and a bud with a red tip, on a jointed green stem with narrow blue-grey leaves in pairs. In a small round frame at the lower left, a seedling with two leaves in a little soil. The bottom band reads JANUARY · BIRTH FLOWER.
