Bureau Seed Co.

June Rose Birth Flower Tote

Not for sale yet. This design is a preview, so there's nothing to buy today.

A June birth flower tote: one deep red rose on a thorny stem, printed on the face of a cream seed packet from Bureau Seed Co., a seed house that never existed.

One full, many-petalled rose opens on a thorny stem with serrated leaves. ROSE runs across an oxblood band at the top, a 5¢ seal sits beside the bloom, and JUNE · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 06 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

June was the pilot, and what it needed set the look for all twelve: a larger, sparser border, bigger type, and lettering from the 1920s to the 1940s. The bands had to get deeper before the bigger names would fit. We chose the rose over honeysuckle, as the June flower we expected people to look for. Look at the leaves, where a yellow-green sits just off each ink line.

Print artwork: a cream paper seed packet at a slight tilt, with a thin oxblood border set with diamonds and dots, and BUREAU SEED CO. · No. 06 on its flap. ROSE is printed in cream on an oxblood band at the top, beside a round oxblood seal reading 5¢. On the packet: one deep red rose, full and many-petalled, on a thorny stem with serrated green leaves. In a small round frame at the lower left, a rooted cutting: a short stem with two leaves and a tuft of roots. The bottom band reads JUNE · BIRTH FLOWER.
