A March birth flower tote: one daffodil with a golden trumpet, printed on the face of a cream seed packet from Bureau Seed Co., a seed house that never existed.

One daffodil stands between its long leaves, with pale petals around a ruffled golden trumpet. DAFFODIL runs across a forest green band at the top, a 5¢ seal sits beside the flower, a bulb fills the small round frame in the corner, and MARCH · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 03 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

One daffodil stands for March, not a field of them, and the round frame in the corner holds its bulb. Look at the ruffled golden trumpet. We chose the daffodil over the jonquil for that one big trumpet: it is what keeps March apart from December's narcissus, which is small, white and starry.
