A November birth flower tote: one bronze and gold chrysanthemum, printed on the face of a cream seed packet from Bureau Seed Co., a seed house that never existed.

One large chrysanthemum, its gold and bronze petals curling inward, stands on a stem of deeply lobed leaves. CHRYSANTHEMUM runs across a wine band at the top, a 5¢ seal sits beside the bloom, and NOVEMBER · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 11 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

One flower stands for November, not a pot of them: a round bloom in bronze and gold, its petals curling in toward the centre. Look at the deeply lobed leaves, and the small rooted sprig in the round frame at the lower left. CHRYSANTHEMUM is the longest single word of the twelve, so it is set smaller to fit its band.
