A sky-blue morning glory opens on a vine that twines up a thin stake, with heart-shaped leaves and two furled buds. MORNING GLORY runs across a persimmon band at the top, a 5¢ seal sits beside the flower, and SEPTEMBER · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 09 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

Follow the vine from the bottom: it climbs a thin stake past heart-shaped leaves to a furled white bud, and the white star in the blue flower is what you see first. We chose the morning glory over the aster, which would have read as a daisy or a small chrysanthemum next to November. MORNING GLORY is a long name, so it is set smaller in its band.
