An April birth flower tote: a sprig of pink, lavender and magenta sweet peas, printed on the face of a cream seed packet from Bureau Seed Co., a seed house that never existed.

Three ruffled flowers, pink, lavender and magenta, climb a sprig with tendrils curling off every side. SWEET PEA runs across a slate blue band at the top, a 5¢ seal sits beside the sprig, and APRIL · BIRTH FLOWER runs along the bottom. It is No. 04 of twelve, one for each month, all laid out the same way so they read as a set.

Observe a little closer.

Three colours share one sprig: pink, lavender and deep magenta, each flower with a white centre. Count the tendrils curling off it, and find the small pink bud on the left. We chose the sweet pea over the daisy because it makes the richer drawing, and a daisy would have sat too close to January's carnation and November's chrysanthemum.
