Crucian Carp in Winter Tee

Not for sale yet. This design is a preview, so there's nothing to buy today.

A crucian carp T-shirt for winter: a small pond cut open under the snow and ice, with a shoal of golden carp resting together at the bottom of the bowl.

These fish get through months under the ice with no oxygen in the water. They turn what builds up in their muscles into alcohol and let it out through their gills, and in many small northern ponds they are the only fish left by spring.

Color: Washed Denim

Relaxed, boxy heavyweight tee with dropped shoulders. Most people take their usual size; size up one for an oversized look.

Care

Garment-dyed, so each shirt's color varies slightly.

Colors on screen are approximate, and light inks can look slightly tinted on red or maroon shirts. A faint square around the print right out of the package is the printer's pretreatment and washes out in the first wash.

Observe a little closer.

The first pond looked too much like the frog's, so this one became a round bowl held in the earth, with spruce on its banks and a birch branch fallen on the ice. Look at the carp: each has no whiskers, a deep body and reddish fins, so they read as crucians and not goldfish.

Print artwork: a small frozen pond cut straight down, drawn as a deep round bowl in the earth. Two snowy spruce trees stand on its banks, with a few bare twigs and a fallen birch branch lying on the pale blue ice. Under the ice, in dark green water, a shoal of golden carp with reddish fins rest together in the deepest part of the bowl, side-on and facing right. The bowl's walls are orange-brown soil with roots and round stones, and fallen leaves lie on the bottom.
