Beaver in Winter Tee

Not for sale yet. This design is a preview, so there's nothing to buy today.

A beaver T-shirt for winter: a stick-and-mud lodge cut open beside a frozen pond, with the family asleep together in the dry chamber and their winter food stored in the mud under the ice.

Beavers don't hibernate. The family, two adults with that spring's kits and often last year's young as well, spends nearly all winter in the lodge, in a chamber that sits just above the water. Their tunnels open underwater, so they can swim out under the ice to the branches they anchored in the pond bottom in autumn.

Care

Garment-dyed, so each shirt's color varies slightly.

Colors on screen are approximate, and light inks can look slightly tinted on red or maroon shirts. A faint square around the print right out of the package is the printer's pretreatment and washes out in the first wash.

Observe a little closer.

Look under the ice at the branch pile: the pale cut ends are down in the mud and the twiggy tops point up. The tunnel needed the most fixing. For a while it drew as a solid log, so it was cut open lengthwise into a dark passage running from the chamber's grass floor down to the pond bottom.

Print artwork: a beaver lodge cut open straight down, a rounded dome of peeled sticks and mud with snow on top and a few bare sticks crossed at the peak. Inside, in a round chamber lined with golden grass, a beaver family sleeps curled together, eyes closed: two adults and three small kits, with one adult's flat scaly tail showing. A dark tunnel slopes from the chamber floor down through the lodge to the pond bottom. To the right, under a band of pale ice, a pile of cut branches stands in the mud of the blue-green pond, pale cut ends down and twiggy tops up, with two cattails on the bank. Below lie bands of brown and golden soil.
